St Wilfred’s Hospice is located in Chichester, West Sussex, and comprises 20 full lead dormers and a flat roof. This meant that when our Ringmer branch welcomed the roofing work from our regular client, Lawrence Baker Ltd, three roofing disciplines were required: flat roofing, roof tiling, and leadwork.

Products Used

Sandtoft New Rivius Clay Roof Tiles – Antique Slate were used for one-half of the roof. Meanwhile, for the other half, Forticrete Hardrow Solos Russet/Brown concrete tiles were used. In addition, a WestWood Liquid Roofing system was applied.

How Were These Products Installed?

Every tile was mechanically clipped and nailed as per the respective manufacturer’s specification.

Why Did We Choose to Use These Products?

Both Sandtoft New Rivius Clay Roof tiles and Forticrete Hardrow Solos concrete tile were selected because as they both went well with the nearby buildings and area. This was so much the case that the Hardrow Solos tiles were used on one side of the roof to match the houses at the back of the site and the Sandtoft Rivus tiles were fitted to be sympathetic to the appearance of the houses located at the front of the hospice.

Sandtoft New Rivius Clay Roof Tiles – Antique Slate contribute all the visual benefits of traditional slate, for example, the detailed texture, intricacy, and lack of colour fading, but for an economic price whilst being simple and quick to install because double lapping is not necessary.

Hardrow Solos are rarely seen on Southern UK roofs. However, they offer unique aesthetics as they are intentionally manufactured to differ slightly in size, shape, and thickness to enhance the character of a roof. This individuality creates a much sought-after traditional look.

A Job Well Done

We are pleased to report that kept to the £170,000 budget and completed the roofing work within the allocated time period (roofing works began in December 2020, and finished in February 2021).

Waste materials were disposed of responsibly to minimise the environmental impact and Health and Safety rules, including COVID-19 guidelines, were strictly adhered to.

Some of Bracknell Roofing’s staff gained valuable experience working on the project with a few of our roof tiling and slating trainees working on it under supervision, illustrating our core value of investing in the roofers of tomorrow.

What Did Our Client Think?

The project met the expectations of Lawrence Baker Ltd’s, who were undertaking the work for Frontier Estates Ltd, as the below testimonial shows:

“Bracknell have been efficient from tendering to completion with closely monitored works on site and regular liaison with management. Nothing is a problem and I’ve found works are completed seamlessly.”

Ryan Farrell, Contracts Manager at Lawrence Baker Ltd.

We are so proud of this project that we have entered it for the ‘Best Use of Clay and Concrete Tiles for a Commercial Project’ category of RCI Magazine’s Pitched Roofing Awards.
