Our Ringmer branch was thrilled to supply, not one, not two, not three but four areas of roofing expertise in a project for client Lawrence Baker Ltd that demanded four roofing disciplines.
We carried out roof tiling, leadwork, flat roofing, and metal cladding work for Lawrence Baker Ltd’s Broadoaks Care Home in West Byfleet, Surrey. Lawrence Baker Ltd was the Principal Contractor on the large-scale project, undertaking the work for Hamberley Developments (Ascot) Ltd, a luxury elderly residential nursing and specialist care home provider.
The roof featured many elements of interest, such as 30 metal clad dormers cheeks and fronts with tiled bonnet hips, a sunken flat roof, and lots of intricate bespoke carpentry details and interfaces that operatives had to consider.
Edilians (formerly IMERYS Roof Tiles) now manufactures the IMERYS Phalempin clay weathered plain tiles. IMERYS Toiture is a leading French clay tile company, whose tiles are imported to the UK by Clay and Slate Roofing products and manufactured in France.
The tiles were fixed and nailed as per the manufacturer’s specification.
As Broadoaks Care Home is in an area thought to be an exclusive location, the Phalempin clay weathered plain tiles were chosen to help maintain the look and feel of the surroundings. A new estate is also being built nearby which will most likely use roof tiles with a similar/sympathetic appearance. The Phalempin clay plain tiles have an attractive textured sand finish and thickness often linked with costly handmade clay tiles. They provided a complimentary yet economic answer, perfect for this project and its location.
Although access to the site wasn’t impeded and the project was free from environmental and logistics disruption, this was the first project Bracknell Roofing Ringmer had worked on that used plain tiles due to the large size of the roof.
Due to the many interesting elements of the roof outlined above, our roofers had to work closely with the on-site carpenters to ensure that everything followed the site drawings and specifications, as well as the usual liaising with scaffolding contractors and other trades to smoothly deliver the roofing works.
In addition to supplying the expertise for the four different roofing disciplines of roof tiling, leadwork, flat roofing and metal cladding, we were proud to invest in the development of more junior team members, with three trainees currently completing their Level 2 NVQ in roof slating and tiling working on the site.
We are pleased to report that all roofing works were completed within the allotted timescale of the beginning of February – 17th June 2021 (the remaining parts of the project are still ongoing), within budget and to Lawrence Baker Ltd’s satisfaction. COVID risk management measures were adhered to, waste was responsibly disposed of with the correct segregation, and health and safety regulations were followed.
We are so happy with this project in fact, that we have put it forward in the ‘Best Use of Clay and Concrete Roof Tiles for a Commercial Project’ category at RCI Magazine’s 2021 Pitched Roofing Awards.
“Myself and my colleagues have enjoyed working with Bracknell Roofing. They have been very reactive and responsive to all our needs. We have a good working relationship with them, which the Broadoaks Care Home project has only helped to strengthen. They’ve consistently delivered high-quality work, which has been complemented by all visitors to the site, including the client team.”
