The Ben Ainslie Racing America’s Cup team headquarters’ roof was completed in gold-winning time as Bracknell Roofing sailed in to get the project over the finish line.

Constructed to help Sir Ben Ainslie and his racing team challenge the America’s Cup on the world stage, the iconic building stands on the Camber in Portsmouth. As well as being the team headquarters for design and training, it also plays host to boat building and acts as a public visitor centre which includes VIP hospitality.

To complete the striking construction Axter Wilotekt-Plus a hot melt system was specified for approximately 2,800 square foot of surfaces across four separate roofs. The roofing was also required to be finished with paved areas and ballasted with stoned perimeters. One small roof with single ply stairwell (Ecoflex Axter) was also specified.

However, while aesthetically stunning, the curves and shape of the building meant specialist skills for the detailing of hot melt system were required. This minimal storage space, and the short timescale given for completion of the roofing project, meant Bracknell Roofing saw co-ordination of all trades was needed to ensure works were completed to a high standard without damaging the roof, in an efficient manner and on time. In addition, the headquarters had to meet the BREEAM Excellent Standard.

Andrew Rooke, sales and marketing director at Bracknell Roofing, says:

“The importance of this project being completed on time and a high standard was not just vital to the success of Ben Ainslie’s racing team, but also to the Portsmouth community. It is an iconic building and one which we were able to demonstrate our ability to undertake complex works, manage a site and fit a suitable project in the time scale provided.”

Since its completion in June 2015, the Ben Ainslie Racing America’s Cup team headquarters stands as a focal point of the Portsmouth community. It meets the requirements for the BREEAM Excellent Standard and showcases the sport, innovation, technology and sustainability ingrained in its design. As a well used public building, it welcomes schools and community groups to witness the construction and on-going operation of the team’s America’s Cup boats first-hand.

Andrew Rooke continues:

“We always take pride in the quality of our work. So seeing a project we’ve worked on receive the BREEAM Excellent Standard as well as being so often used by the public is very rewarding. We hope we’ll be seeing lots more award-winning work coming from the centre in the future, but this time steered by Sir Ben Ainslie and his team!”
