The project

William Bradford Court in the market town of Bawtry, South Yorkshire, is named after a leading Pilgrim Father who sailed on the Mayflower in 1620. The over-60s retirement development that bears his name consists of 34 fully equipped one- and two-bedroomed apartments, some with private terraces. Among the on-site facilities are a dedicated residents’ lounge, a guest suite for families and friends, and landscaped gardens.

The roofing installation

This was a relatively straightforward installation, apart from the acutely restricted site access. Moving materials to the working areas was difficult throughout the six-week contract period, involving pre-ordering of tiles and carefully timed deliveries. Bracknell Roofing installed the roofing for the main residential block and a secondary building. In total, it was 1,600 square metres. New-generation, open-gauge Sandtoft Flanders Neo Pantiles, made from natural alluvial clay, were used for the outer slopes. Sandtoft Terracotta Red Shires were also employed. Both sets of interlocking pantiles provide a traditional look, coupled with durability and longevity.

Why Bracknell Roofing?

Developer McCarthy & Stone, also the main contractor at the Bawtry site, assumes responsibility for external maintenance throughout the lives of its retirement home projects. Therefore, solid, trouble-free characteristics are required for every aspect of this and any other development, not least the roofing. McCarthy & Stone left nothing to chance by selecting Bracknell Roofing: a tried, trusted and proven subcontractor on several of its earlier schemes. Of further relevance, all of Bracknell Roofing’s work complies with the latest British Standard, BS5534:2014, which governs the design, materials used, application, installation and performance of slates, tiles and shingles.

“This was a tricky site because of the tight access. As ever, we enjoyed excellent working relations with McCarthy & Stone’s site manager, and that helped a lot. Nothing was going to prevent us from finishing the job on time and to budget, not even the inclement January and February weather. As a side issue, the client was endeavouring to complete sales of the apartments as early as possible. Quite a few prospective buyers came on site while we were there, and we played our part by chatting to them about the quality of products and workmanship that were being applied.”
