Roofing Industry a New Challenge for Former Footballer
Rather than being downbeat about a serious injury that cut short his time as a footballer, Steve O’Hara has grabbed the opportunity to build a new career in the roofing industry – and is proving to be a rising star at Bracknell Roofing.
In what can only be described as very bad luck, Steve – a winger with clubs including Major League Soccer (MLS) side Columbus Crew – fell over and broke his ankle, as well as damaging his knee and ligaments. This meant he had to return to the UK following a decade in the United States.
Steve needed to do something and started labouring for one of our roofing contractors onsite. He came to the attention of our Regional Contracts Director Joss Elliott at our Warrington branch, who was impressed with his CV and qualifications and took him on in an administrative role at the branch, supporting the Contracts Managers.
He was responsible for ordering stock for the yard at Warrington, which in turn was delivered to sites across the North West. As he got more involved, he took on more responsibility and was recently promoted to the role of Assistant Contracts Manager (ASM). This involves running sites, dealing with roofers and tilers, ordering materials, organising payments to contractors and raising invoices – and Steve puts his success down to the support of the rest of the team at the Warrington branch.
“I started at the bottom, literally, as a labourer for a roofing contractor five years ago,” said Steve, who has a young child and is soon to be married.
“Joss saw my potential, and the team at the Warrington branch have been really supportive. Although it has been a steep learning curve, I’ve loved every minute of it because of the team spirit and the willingness of some of our most experienced people to share their knowledge and advice.
“It’s fair to say that it was a case of ‘in at the deep end’, but I’ve been able to learn from people with decades of experience. In a comparatively short space of time, I’ve become an ASM with responsibility for managing projects on nearly a dozen sites.”
Our Divisional Director Simon Smith said that Steve is a great example of someone who has come to the roofing industry, recognised the potential and is carving out a successful career.
“At Bracknell Roofing, we’re fully committed to spotting the potential of people and investing in them in order to keep developing and refining the expertise of our workforce at all levels,” said Simon.
“Steve is a shining example of someone who joined us, saw the opportunity and has grasped it to become a key member of the team. We have high hopes that he will continue to be a rising star at Bracknell Roofing.”
