Bracknell Roofing’s extensive expertise as a refurbishment, Slating & Tiling specialist has been called upon by Balfour Beatty to assist them in delivering an iconic community project.
The historic Stirchley Baths is being transformed into a major community hub for the Stirchley area. The whole site was in a state of disrepair, not only to the roof but the main building was also damaged, both structurally & aesthetically.
A key area of the project was to preserve the historic features of the building, Bracknell Roofing’s expertise in working with heritage buildings and the traditional roofing skills they carry, allowed them to retain the original character and features of the roof.
Bracknell Roofing site operatives started work on the Stirchley Community Hub in November 2014. Work is progressing well on the Grade II listed Swimming Baths, which are being converted into a vibrant, modern community centre.
The roofing work involves a number of complex roofing details, including abutments to lead atriums, a feature curved roof, along with the challenge of installing both original reclaimed slates from the old roof and reclaimed slates from a specialist supplier – A Westmoreland Slate & a Welsh Slate. The Slates had been examined thoroughly, with great attention to detail in order to retain the period weathered look of the building which has stood since 1910. Additionally Bracknell Roofing had to source a further 50% of reclaimed Slates, which would seamlessly blend in with the original materials in order to ensure all roof areas looked as one and in accordance to the original material specification.
A methodical approach had to be employed to re-arrange the Slates into segregated areas according to their size, weight and colour. This process was adopted so that the original method of Slating can be replicated, for ease of installation.
As it stands, around 90% of the main roof covering has been completed, along with 50% of the lower roof covering complete. This includes the long feature curved roof section, finished with a traditional mortar bedded clay ridge tile. When standing back from the project at ground level, you really can appreciate the transformation to the overall look of the building.
Code 4 lead has been used throughout the project for flashings and abutments. Along the featured curved section and to the front parapet, Scott Bauder GRP valleys and gutters have been installed. Work continues to progress on time and will be completed ahead of schedule. Further updates will follow in the coming months to keep you abreast of the situation on this interesting project.
